I’ve always been drawn to ideas that move across disciplines, from the way a chair is constructed to the thinking behind a typeface, a building or a piece of software. What fascinates me is rarely just the outcome, but the people behind it: how they arrived there, what influenced them and what shaped the idea along the way.
Following those questions tends to lead somewhere unexpected. One conversation leads to another, one reference to the next, and before long you find yourself somewhere you hadn’t intended to go.
Some of the most memorable things I’ve discovered have happened this way. A conversation introduces me to someone whose work I didn’t know. Someone explains why an object was made the way it was. Or I take an unexpected turn down a street and come across a place I would otherwise never have found. What interests me is that one thing so often becomes a way into another.
I’ve never really thought of design, technology, art and culture as separate worlds. Much of my own work happens somewhere between them, alongside people from different backgrounds who continually challenge the way I think and see things.
That has made me appreciate the value of being around people who see things differently. We’ve never been more connected, yet so much of that connection happens through a screen. Being in the same room allows for a different kind of exchange, where conversations can unfold without knowing exactly where they might lead.
The Bauhaus brought different disciplines under one roof. Warhol’s Factory became a meeting point for people across art, music, film and culture. Very different places, but both show what can happen when people who might not otherwise cross paths find themselves in the same room.
I kept coming back to that thought: what would our own version of that look like? Having grown up in Switzerland, it felt natural to begin here. The country has a remarkable creative heritage across design, architecture, art, engineering and craftsmanship. Yet I’ve often wished there were more moments where people from across these fields simply found themselves in the same room.
That’s why we’re hosting Curated Edition 01.
For this first edition, we’re collaborating with POLARWIND and opening the doors to their studio in Zurich on September 10. We’re keeping things simple: no panels, no pitching and no real agenda. Just a place for creative people to meet and exchange over music and drinks, and perhaps leave with an idea, perspective or connection they didn’t arrive with.
